How to Use Dowel Rods When Laminating a Countertop

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • New laminate
  • Dowel rods
  • Contact cement
  • J-roller

Using dowel rods to cover a counter top with laminate is a smart thing to do. As long as you know how to use them and why, your project should be a breeze.

Read below, and you will discover steps that will help you achieve a good end product.

Step 1 - Purchase the Dowel Rods

You will want to measure out your counter top to get a number of the rods that you will need. You will be using one dowel rod about every three or four feet of counter top.

After you have measured out your countertop, purchase the correct amount of dowel rods.

Step 2 - Apply Contact Cement

Once you have prepared your countertop for the new laminate, you will want to apply contact cement to the top surface.

Step 3 - Place the Rods

Place the rods about every three or four feet along your countertop, making sure you are not pushing on them, but just setting them in place.

Step 4 - Lay New Laminate

Now take your laminate and lay it over the dowel rods. Once your sheet is in the right place, take out your dowels one by one. Then, use your J-roller to attach it to the counter top.
