Tile adhesive is a material that many consider to be difficult to work with. However, if you have some practice and understand the basic principles involved, it can become a lot easier to use. Here are the basics of how to use tile adhesive effectively.
Step 1--Determine which Adhesive to Use
There are several different types of tile adhesive that you could potentially use for a job. You can use thinset, mastic, or a special type of adhesive that is designed for marble and natural stone. If you are installing regular tile such as ceramic or porcelain on the floor, you may want to use thinset. If you are installing tile on the wall, using mastic is usually preferred, but you can use thinset as well. If you are working with marble or natural stone, you will want to consider purchasing the adhesive that is specially designed for it. You can also use a white thinset when you are working with marble or natural stone because it will not discolor the tile.
Step 2--Mixing the Adhesive
Some types of tile adhesive comes in a premixed container. This is very common with mastic and it also applies to thinset on occasion. However, in many cases, the adhesive is not going to be mixed up. It is going to come in a large bag in powder form. This is going to require you to mix it up yourself in a bucket. In order to do this, you will need to pour the powder into a bucket. Then you will need to read the side of the bag to determine how much water to pour in with the powder. Add the appropriate amount of water and then you can start mixing it up. You could do this with a large mixing spoon. The easiest way to make the adhesive is to use a drill with a stirring paddle attachment. This is essentially going to work the same way as a mixer. When you do this, you do not want to use too much water and let the adhesive get too thin. You also do not want it so thick that you cannot work with it. Many people recommend that you should get it to the thickness of peanut butter before stopping.
Step 3--Applying the Adhesive
Once you have mixed up the adhesive, you can apply it. You want to work quickly so that you do not allow any of it to dry out. In most cases, you will want to apply the adhesive directly to the floor with a trowel. In some cases, you can apply it to the back of a tile instead. This is advisable when you are working in small areas. You can also apply it with a putty knife when you are doing small wall tiles.
