by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Water-based whitewash solution
  • Paint roller with telescoping handle
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Mop or microfiber cloths
  • Clean rags
  • Face mask
  • Hand sanding pads
  • Sanding machine

In wanting to change the look of your home, you will find it beneficial to know how to whitewash wood floors. By following the simple steps that the process requires, you can give your home a fresh clean look with little effort.

Step 1 – Gather Equipment

The tools needed will depend on the condition of your floor. If your floor is in a good state of repair, you will only need to remove the surface finish which will only require the use of sanding pads. However, if your floor has sustained any damage, it is prudent to use a machine to sand the floor; one of these can be obtained from an equipment hire company if you are satisfied that you can undertake the task yourself.

Step 2 – Sand Floor

The first step required to whitewash wood floors is to sand it to remove the finish that exists. After ensuring that the floor is free of any dirt and debris, use sanding pads in accordance with the instructions or a sanding machine if there are imperfections to be removed (or you want to save your knees!). It is prudent to wear a mask to stop from inhaling the resulting dust.

Step 3 – Clean Up

Keep the mask on after completing the sanding task as dust can still be stirred up during cleaning. Start by vacuuming up the excess, paying special attention to the corners and edges of the room. Set the vacuum aside when you have finished and use a damp mop or cloth to wipe up any remaining dust. Ensure the mop or cloth is only damp, not sodden, and rinse it regularly in clean water. Allow the floor to dry thoroughly.

Step 4 – Apply Whitewash

Beginning at a point that is furthest away from the door to access the room, you can begin applying the whitewash. Use the paint roller to apply it to a small section of the floor at a time. Avoid gathering too much whitewash solution onto the roller. Leave the solution in place for up to three minutes before wiping it away with a rag. Continue with this process until you have completed the entire floor before allowing it to dry undisturbed and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If possible, increase the ventilation to the room.

While the whitewash wood floor is drying, take the opportunity to wash and dry the paint roller ready to be used again.

Step 5 – Finishing Touches

Once the whitewash wood is dry, you will be in a position to varnish the floor to enhance and protect it further. Evenly apply a clear water-based varnish using a paint roller. Once the entire floor is complete, leave it to dry undisturbed for at least 24 hours while leaving the room ventilated.

The floor can then be used as normal and, if desired, wax can be applied to provide further shine.
