How to Wire a Ceiling Fan to an Existing Switch

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Ceiling Fan
  • Wire screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Electrical tape
  • Wire strippers
  • Step Ladder

If you wish to wire a ceiling fan into your room, you will need to wire it up to the electrical box near your switches, and then add a second switch to the box. This is a very complicated method, but one which will allow you to connect the ceiling fan to an already existing switch box. Once you have fitted both the fan and the lighting connections to the one place, you can use the ceiling fan by simply operating the switch. This is not a task for someone who has never wired anything before, but if you have done a few odd jobs around the home and feel able to do this yourself, you should be able to manage it by following a few simple instructions.

Step 1 - Turn off the Electricity

Before you can go any further, you will need to cut off the electricity to the room you will be placing the fan in. Make sure that you remove the fuse, or tape up the circuit breaker, so that the power cannot accidentally be restored by someone else. You may also want to turn on the lights in the room you are using, so you know when the power goes off, although this is not necessary if you completely remove the fuse. Check that the power is off by turning on electrical devices in the room, and then you can start.

Step 2 - Remove the Light Fitting

Position the ceiling fan in the place where you want it to be. Assemble all the parts, and then climb up the step ladder. Place the assembled fan on the highest step, and stand below it. Remove the light fixture which the fan will be replacing, and then pull down the light so that the wires are exposed. You should be able to see three wires, which are a green wire (the grounding wire), a white wire, which is neutral, and then a live wire which is either black or red. Remove the tape or nut which is holding the wire in place.

Step 3 - Attach the Ceiling Fan

Check that the wire will support the fan, and if not reinforce the wire by adding a bracket. This will help support the weight of your ceiling fan. Attach the wires, the green to the grounding connection, the white to the neutral, and the red or block to the live wire. Do this by first cutting off enough insulation to expose the wires beneath. Wire the ceiling fan into the ceiling, by placing a wire screw or nut onto the wire, and wrapping it up with electrical tape. Insert each wire into the correct location. Push the fan up into position, and secure it into place. Once this is done, turn the wires back on, and check that the power is running to the fan.
