A halogen floor lamp is pretty much any normal lamp that takes a standard light bulb. These are older models when compared to lamps that come with LED lights or even fluorescent bulbs. Over time, a halogen floor lamp can fail, but there is no reason to panic as they can be completely rewired. Follow the simple steps below to effectively rewire your floor lamp.
Step 1 – Safety
When working with any form of electricity or electrical device, you need to make sure you are protected. Even though a halogen floor lamp is a simple device, it can still give you quite a shock. Make sure that the halogen floor lamp is not plugged into the wall and, if it is, unplug it.
If the lamp had been working up to this point, give it time to cool down. Halogen lights are much hotter than newer floor lamps. If you try to work on it while it was just unplugged, you could easily burn yourself.
Step 2 – Disassemble the Halogen Floor Lamp
Remove the lamp shade and bulb. Remove the shade holder by unscrewing it to the left. Sometimes a ring will hold it place in which case you unscrew that to the left. Pull the holder off the lamp (along with the ring if present) and the socket will be loose. Grab the plug near the base and push it into the base while gently pulling up on the socket until you can see the wires; cut them. Make not of which colored wire is attached to which screw then loosen the screws and remove the wires. The base screws off the shaft and, depending how tall the halogen floor lamp is, the shaft may be in sections. Disconnect everything. If the base has screws on the bottom; remove them. Pull out the old wire.
Step 3 – Prepare the New Wire
Cut enough new wire for the height of the halogen floor lamp and extra for plugging into an outlet. These wires are in two pieces but molded together. Use the utility knife to cut through the center of the wire and then pull the two wires apart. Score the casing using the utility knife and then carefully pull it back to reveal black and white wires. Cut the casing off and then strip the white and black wires to expose ½-inch of wire.
Step 4 – Rewire the Lamp
Thread the wire through the bottom of the lamp and through each section of the shaft until you reach the top. Screw the shaft sections together until they are tight. Make sure the plug end is seated in the place holder and then replace the bottom and screw it place. Attach the black and white wire to the proper screws on the bottom of the new socket. Push the socket in place and replace the top ring and shade holder. Install a fresh bulb, plug in and enjoy your newly wired halogen floor lamp.
