How to Wire Phone Systems

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Drill
  • Drill bits
  • Wire cutters
  • Phone wire and jack
  • Corded phone

Installing phone systems in your home can seem hard to do, but the good news is that it really isn't that bad. You can do it in as little as a day if you really want to. You may be wondering how you can do it and if it is something that you should be doing.

Step 1: Find the Phone Line

There may be areas in the home that have phone lines already added. If you find these, then you will be able to find the place that it comes into the home and splices into several phone lines. You will need to start at the place it enters the home to start your new phone line.

Step 2: Start Your Line

For this you will need to either cut the phone line that is coming into the home and add a splicer or you can work with a line that is not used in the home. Once you cut into the line, you will not have phone service until the line has been repaired and the new line has been installed.

Step 3: Route the Line

The next thing that you will need to do is to route the phone line. This can be hard if you don't know where the line will be going. That is why it's important to figure out where the phone will be and the best place for the line to come into the room. It may be possible to route the line through the wall and then add a wall cover to it. You will just have to see what you can come up with.

Step 4: Add the Phone Connector

Once you have found a good place for the phone cord to route and have it where you want it, you can add the phone connector. This is the thing that will allow you to connect to your phone. To do this you will just have to match colors in the wire to the colors in the connector. Once they are all in the area that they should be, the connector can be crimped to the line. Some connectors will not crimp because they attach to the cord and then to the wall. This will be fine if the line is not going to be moved around a lot.

Step 5: Clean Up and Testing

After everything has been connected, it's time to test it out. For this you will need to get your corded phone and attach it to the line you ran. Try to make a phone call and see what happens. If there is no dial tone, you will need to trace the lines back and see where it got messed up. It may be something as simple as a lose wire. Then you can clean up and put your tools away.

Installing a phone system is really not as bad as you think. It is usually as simple as connecting a couple of lines and off your go, but it can get difficult if you are not sure where the lines are at. Take a little time and find them before you start with your install. That way it will all go smoothly.
