Identifying an Antique Doll

by DoItYourself Staff

Whether you want to begin collecting antique dolls, or you have a doll that you want to identify as one that may or may not be an authentic antique, you can use the following information to identify an antique doll.

Antique Qualifiers

Most collectors’ items must be 100 years old to be classified as antique. But to qualify as antique, a doll must have been manufactured before 1930.

Doll Features

Observing and noting features of your doll, such as clothing, hair, etc., can help you determine whether or not a doll is an authentic antique.

Doll Markings

Dolls that have value as an antique will generally have markings on them. These markings can often be located under the doll's hair, on its torso, or on the bottom of its feet. These markings may include lettering, numbering, or symbols that identify the doll or its manufacturer. If you are able to find a manufacturer’s name, this will be a plus for you in determining the value of the doll.

Reference Books

Use information from reference books you find online or at your local library to determine if your doll is an authentic antique. If you find no visible markings, check the reference book to determine if visual features of the doll will help identify it as one that is antique.
