Identifying the Most Common Risks to Home Child Safety

by DoItYourself Staff

As a parent, home child safety should be at the top of your priority list. Most accidents involving children take place in the home and are due to overlooking common problems. There are many areas of the house that could potentially be dangerous for your children. This makes identifying some of the most common risks to children in the home a very important task. Here are a few things to consider about home child safety.

Preventing Poisoning

One of the most common accidents that occurs with children in the home is accidental poisoning. In order to prevent this from happening, a little planning is necessary. You need to put anything that could poison your child clearly out of their reach. Household cleaners, medication, beauty products and anything else with chemicals needs to be stored where your children can't get into it. If you can put it up high and behind a child safety lock, this is the ideal solution. If you don't have any high cabinets, make sure that a child safety lock is installed on the cabinet door. If a child does ingest something poisonous, be sure to call poison control as soon as possible.

Fall Prevention

Another common accident that occurs with children in the home is when they fall down and injure themselves. There are a number of ways that this could happen and you can't totally prevent all falls. However, you need to take the necessary precautions to prevent the most dangerous falls. For example, if your house has stairs, make sure that small children do not have access to them. Put up a gate to prevent them from climbing on the stairs when you're not looking. If your children are old enough to walk on the stairs, you need to make sure that you install good lighting above them. Being able to see clearly when walking on the stairs can prevent many falls. You should also do your best to keep the stairs free of toys and clutter, to prevent tripping.

Another common area that children fall is in the bathtub. To help prevent this danger, install handrails and put slip resistant mats in the bottom of the tub.

Burn Risk

Burns are another common problem that you have to watch out for with children in the home. Have smoke alarms installed throughout the house in case of an actual fire. However, fire is not the only way that children can be burned.

Many children are burned when parents leave things cooking on the stove. The child will go by and grab a pot handle on the stove and spill boiling water on themselves. To prevent this, you need to always stay by the stove when cooking and turn pot handles away from the edge.

Avoiding Risks

There is no way that you could possibly protect your child from every danger in the home. However, it is up to parents to do the best they can and prevent as many dangers as possible for their children.
