Important Facts when Choosing Candle Wicks

by DoItYourself Staff

If you are doing a project and need some guidelines on choosing candle wicks then here is a little bit of information that can help you with the decision.

Length

The length of the wick is the most important. You want it to be a few centimeters longer than the candle. If it is too short, much of the wax will be left at the end and if it is too long the candle will burn quicker than you want it to.

Diameter

When it comes to the diameter of a candle wick you want to consider the diameter or width of the candle that you are making. The bigger the candle, the thicker or bigger the diameter of the wick should be.

Type of Candle

The type of candle will play a part in the kind of wick that you want to use. CD wicks are great for beeswax candles, solid color or no fragrance. CDN are better for free-standing pillars or paraffin. For pillar or taper candles you will want to use a 3-ply cotton wick.

In general, you want to candle wick to mirror the candle when it comes to size. Other than that, many of the options such as scent or color are up to you.
