Independent Car Repair Shop - What to Know
Most vehicles will have to be repaired at a car repair shop at some stage. Modern cars are so technologically advanced that many of the home repairs and servicing that you could do on older models are impossible on newer cars. When you need repairs you will have to decide whether to take your car to an authorised dealer, or to an independent repair shop. There are a number of reasons for and against both options but here we will discuss the pros and cons of the local repair shop.
Pros
- Cost - most independents can offer the same service as a dealer for a much lower cost. Also, an independent often has more leeway in pricing or deals if you are a long-tem customer.
- Service – Service tends to be the same, if not better than a dealer. Even smaller garages have the same repair and technical information as the dealerships
- Parts – Independents know which aftermarket parts work better in your vehicle, and, when to order factory parts. The savings on good aftermarket parts can be worth the effort, but only if they work well in your vehicle.
- Maintenance – you do not have to go to a dealer for general maintenance. The independents have the same computer system and records that a dealership has.
Cons
- Certified technicians – some smaller repair shops do not employ ASE certified technicians. These technicians must pass extensive exams and are sure to have the skills to match their knowledge.
- New car warranty – To have a repair covered under a new car warranty, the repair must be done at a dealership. You will have to foot the bill if you get the repair done at an independent.
- Scams – Some repair shops will try to sell you services or parts that you don’t need.
Before you have the need to have your car fixed, it is a good idea to check out some of the local repair shops for small repairs and services such as oil changes or tune-ups, so you can judge for yourself the level of care and service they provide. This allows you to find one that you trust and have a relationship with. You can form a relationship with the manager and get an idea of the efficiency of the business. When you have a serious repair to be made, you don’t want to be running around in a panic, unsure of where to go while under stress.
Try to find an auto shop that specialises in your vehicle type. A repair shop that specialises in your type of vehicle will save you time and should be more reliable simply because they have the right knowledge and spare parts on hand. This will save you money as you are paying by the hour.
If you are still unsure which auto shop to choose, look for AAA approval. AAA screens shops for honesty, pricing and mechanic training. AAA approved repair shops also have ASE certified mechanics for your peace of mind. Keep in mind that word of mouth is a powerful recommendation, so ask around your friends and acquaintances to see what repair shop they prefer.
