Indoor Swimming Pool Maintenance

by DoItYourself Staff

It is easy to keep your indoor swimming pool in top condition if you keep a few tips in mind. With less cost and effort, you ensure that your pool will remain a pleasant place in which you and your guests can swim.

Tip 1 - Pool Color

Debris in your pool can turn its color green. You can avoid this discoloration by using a leaf net—rather than a hand skimmer—to stir up the water so that any debris on the bottom will have a tendency to rise to the surface where it can be removed.

Tip 2 - PH Levels

Scaly water and corrosion are often caused by water pH that has become too low or too high. To prevent this imbalance, you will need to frequently test the pool's water and add chemicals that will bring the pH back to its proper balance. You can easily do this using testing strips purchased from your local pool store. Alternatively, you can take a sample of your pool water to a pool store that will probably test it for you at no charge.

Tip 3 - Murky or Unclear Water

Pool water often becomes murky or unclear when it contains higher than normal levels of algae or bacteria. When this happens, you can use shock chemicals that will correct this problem. Tests performed by your local pool store will help you identify this condition. Technicians who do the testing also recommend chemicals you can use to keep algae and bacteria problems under control.

Tip 4 - Filter Replacement

Even when you filter your pool water daily, added chemicals may cause a cloudy or greenish appearance. This could be an indication that your water filter needs to be replaced or repaired.

Tip 5 - General Maintenance

Even though your pool is indoors, you may want to consider closing it down temporarily to perform routine inspections and repairs. Winter months are a good time to do this maintenance. During this time, follow these steps:

  1. Drain your pool to clean or repaint the pool's concrete surface.
  2. Check pool pump and filter.
  3. Repair any chips or cracks in your deck.
  4. Check your filter and pump for proper operation.
  5. Lubricate bolts on diving boards or other moving equipment.
  6. Check ladders, rails and diving board for needed repairs.
  7. If you have a gas pool heater, check connections for possible gas leaks.

Follow these maintenance tips to ensure that your family and guests will enjoy your pool without concern for health or safety.
