Install a Bike Rack Mount in Your Garage
A bike rack mount in your garage can help you reclaim space in this room. With a bike rack, your bike can be safely above your cars while still being accessible for your next biking trip.
Choose the Right Rack Mount
As more people choose to ride bikes, the selection of bike rack mounts grows. There are racks for single bikes as well as multiple bikes, as well as mounts for bikes with larger bodies and for those with smaller bodies. It will help to go into a bike supply shop with the measurements of your current bikes. This way, you can choose the bike rack mount which will hold the bicycles you own safely and securely. In addition, consider the space you have available on your ceiling or wall. The mount needs to fit there as well, so you will want to measure the space you have available to be certain the mount works in that placement.
Placement
Speaking of placement, bikes should be stored over an area which will not cause harm to others. You will not want to have your bikes stored over your cars, for example. You will want to store your bikes on their mount over a workspace or perhaps over a clear space. Mounting your bikes over the door is another example of a poor placement. Realize too that bikes which are stored on a side wall will protrude, so there needs to be enough clearance in these areas before installing the rack.
Installation
Installing the bike rack is simple when you purchase a mount kit. Take the rods and bars out of the box and line them out as directed by the instructions. Having a friend help you with this process is recommended as they can hold the bars in place until you screw the bolts into the wall or the ceiling. If there are no studs in the walls, use anchors to ensure the bolts or screws will not pull out of the wall when the bike is on the rack. Tighten the screws once the bars are in place, gently pulling on the bar when done to check the tightness.
Safety Concerns
While you may have installed the bike rack mount correctly, you will still want to be careful when walking under or to the sides of the bikes. Check the rack frequently to ensure it’s secure. Also, remind visitors to mind their body when walking around the bikes. If you are concerned that the bikes may still not be secure, using bungee cords around the tires can help to ensure the bike will stay put in the rack. Being mindful of how the bike is put into the rack is basic advice for safety, but something which can be overlooked at the end of a long ride.
A bike rack mount in your garage will allow you to store your bikes in a safer place out of sight. With this additional space available, you can put the cars back in your garage.
