Install a Hanging Wall Shelf in a Closet

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Shelving unit
  • Drill
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Marker

There isn't a closet in the world that could not benefit from a hanging wall shelf. These shelves are very popular in modern homes and they provide that feeling of having extra space. People can normally do this job on their own:

Step 1 - Measuring

Measure the location in your closet that you want to place the hanging wall shelf. Mark the space with a marker and place the marker to the side if it is needed later on.

Step 2 - Using Stud Finder

Take the stud finder and drag it across the wall of the closet to find the studs in the closet. When this is done the marker will then be used to mark them. Then place the level to the location that was marked and draw a line across it. Be sure that the line crosses the studs.

Step 3 - Mounting/Finishing

Take the first support bracket and mount it to the stud which is closest to the end location for the shelf. Drill a screw into the location. Place the remaining brackets the same way and space them at 45 inches apart. The brackets will each attach to a wall stud. After this the shelf will be placed on top of the brackets and then secured.
