One of the most popular new additions to a home is foyer pendant lighting. With a unique appearance and charm, pendant lighting provides ample light from an overhead location without taking up a great deal of space. This can be a good way to enhance the look and feel of your foyer without installing a large chandelier or other light which may cause the entry to your home to feel smaller than it should. Here is a brief guide on how to install pendant lighting in your foyer in a few easy steps.

Step 1 - Disable the Power

Before you even begin to work on your foyer lighting, it's crucial that you disable the power at the source. In most cases, this will require that you flip off the circuit breaker for the foyer lighting at the central circuit control panel.

Step 2 - Remove Existing Fixtures

The existing light fixture should now be taken down. Do this by first unscrewing the fixture from the ceiling. Be careful as you do this that the fixture does not drop to the ground and break. You may need someone to help you. Detach the wires from the fixture and untangle them so that they can be reinstalled on the pendant lights.

Step 3 - Attach the Pendant Fixture

The pendant lighting fixture will then need to be attached to the ceiling. Look for the way to screw the fixture into the space left by the previous light fixture. If you're in doubt about how to install the pendant lighting, consult with the packaging for the pendant fixture to find installation instructions. Be sure that the pendant fixture is securely in place before continuing.

Step 4 - Snip the Wires and Attach Them

Remove about a quarter of an inch of wire from the ends of the pendant light's wiring. This will allow you to more easily connect those wires with the wires that exist in the ceiling. Match up the wires for the pendant light fixture and the wires from the ceiling by color. Twist them together to ensure a close and reliable contact. If desired, attach wire nuts to the wires to help secure them in place.

Step 5 - Seal the Wires in the Ceiling

After you've secured the wire ends from the pendant lighting fixture to the wire ends from the ceiling, push the wires up into the ceiling to secure them in place. Install the pendant light canopy in place to fix the wires in the ceiling.

Step 6 - Attach the Pendant Connectors

If your pendant lighting fixture has a set of connectors that attach the fixture to the canopy in different locations, affix these fixtures to the canopy at this point. When the fixture is set up properly, install a light bulb. Turn the power to the system back on at the circuit breaker and test to be sure that the system is set up properly.
