Install Sound-Absorbing Foam in 7 Steps

Installing sound-absorbing foam is a simple solution for soundproofing in your home. Sound-absorbign foam panels come in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes to help compliment your room décor. Regardless the reason for this project, applying sound-absorbing foam panels to the walls and ceiling in a room can be completed easily when following some simple instructions.

Step 1 – Measurements

Take careful measurements of your entire room including ceiling space as well. Make sure to jot these dimensions down on a piece of paper with a pencil. You will need these measurements to purchase a sufficient amount of foam panels to complete the project. Always add an additional 10 to 15 percent in the event you make a mistake or a need arises in the future to replace a damaged tile.

Step 2 – Select and Purchase

Do a little online research where you can check out the variety of color, shapes and sizes that sound absorbing foam is available. Almost all sound absorbing foam panels are self-adhering Velcro fastening so you won’t need to apply any messy glue. Oftentimes, online sources offer discounts for purchasing on the Internet. Some offer online purchasing with free delivery to a nearby site such as a national retailer or home improvement center. Be careful, however that any shipping charges applied now make the product more expensive than buying it locally to begin with. When your purchase the sound absorbing ceiling tiles, make sure you have the correct amount as well as enough Velcro srapping to complete the project successfully.

Step 3 – Cut Pieces to Fit

Work from the center of a wall or ceiling laying full size pieces in either direction toward the walls. Cut pieces to fit along the edges or around objects protruding through the walls or ceiling.

Step 4 – Velcro Fasteners

Peel the backing off the Velcro fastening layer and directly adhere this to the wall or ceiling.

Step 5 – Apply Velcro to Foam

Peel the paper backing off the remaining Velcro fasteners and apply these to the backs of the sound absorbing foam

Step 6 – Attach Foam Panels

Align the Velcro on the back of the sound absorbing foam panels to the Velcro on the walls or ceiling and attach the two together.

Step 7 – Repeat

Repeat the process until all the room surface area is covered with sound absorbing foam panels.

It is a good idea to purchase some extra Velcro fastening straps as backups. You can find these in many major retail or home improvement stores.
