Install Your Own Home Security Sensors

by DoItYourself Staff

Installing your own wireless home security sensors is a great way to improve the security of your home youself and avoid professional installation fees.

Tools and Materials Needed

•    Philips and Flathead Screwdrivers
•    Window Sensors
•    Door Sensors
•    Remote Control Panel
•    Primary Control Panel
•    UPS – Uninterruptable Power Supply

Step 1-Purchase Sensors

Purchase the appropriate amount of window and door sensors.  Every window and entry door to your home should have a sensor.

Step 2-Choose Window Sensor Locations

Determine the locations where you will be installing the sensors on each window. Generally it is best to put them at a higher level to prevent them from being knocked off or damaged.

Step 3-Clean Window Sensor Locations

Clean the location on the window and window frame where the sensors will be mounted.

Step 4-Mount Window Sensors

Peel the adhesive off on the back of each of the two window sensor components and mount the window sensor on each window and the frame sensor on the window frame directly next to the window sensor.

Step 5-Choose Door Sensor Locations

Select the location where you will be installing each of the door sensors.

Step 6-Clean Door Sensor Locations

Clean the location on the door and door frame where the sensors will be mounted.

Step 7-Mount Door Sensors

Peel the adhesive off on the back of the two components of each door sensor. The door sensor is mounted on the door and the doorframe sensor is mounted directly next to the door sensor on the doorframe.

Step 8-Select Location for Control Panel

Select a location where you will be installing your remote control panel. The most effective location is within 4 feet of the front door.

Step 9-Install Control Panel

Determine if your remote control panel will be installed into studs or drywall. If you will be installing it into drywall then mark where the screws will be mounted and install drywall anchors. Mount the remote control sensor to the wall using the supplied screws. If no screws were supplied you can use standard drywall or wood screws.  Connect your UPS to the control panel.
