Installing a Car Computer: Bluetooth Options

by DoItYourself Staff

When installing a car computer, there are several Bluetooth options you can consider before completing your installation. Bluetooth is a wireless technology that allows vehicle operators to perform other functions hands-free while driving. By creating a wireless, hands-free system and utilizing a car computer capable of these Bluetooth features, drivers can multitask while driving in a safer fashion.

By installing a car computer with Bluetooth capabilities, you can control many different features, peripheral devices and onboard electronics wirelessly. By utilizing the Bluetooth technology, drivers can retain their focus on driving while also operating everyday electronics and applications.

Bluetooth Phone

The most widely known form of Bluetooth in cars is the cellular Bluetooth connection. This allows drivers to communicate on their cell phone while driving without requiring them to free a hand to hold their phone. This Bluetooth system creates a connection between a wireless phone and the vehicle allowing the driver to operate their phone wirelessly. Some Bluetooth phone systems have voice recognition capabilities allowing the driver to speak commands that will operate the phone. By simply using your voice, you could command your phone to call one of your contacts and hold a conversation without ever touching your phone. Other Bluetooth systems in vehicles that are not voice recognition capable function by using buttons or keys on the side of the steering wheel or sun visor. By pressing a button, you can answer an incoming call, click to call waiting or disconnect a call.

Bluetooth Navigation

When installing a car computer, you should also consider another fast growing Bluetooth technology, the Bluetooth navigation system. There are navigation systems that disable button features while the vehicle is in 'Drive' to prevent drivers from manipulating the system while driving. Bluetooth technology has created a hands-free way for drivers to operate their GPS or navigation systems while driving. By utilizing voice recognition and Bluetooth technology, many new navigation systems can recognize voiced commands and generate maps and directions without the driver needing to remove their hands from the steering wheel.

Bluetooth Radio

There are also car computers that can utilize Bluetooth technology to operate the vehicle’s radio. Without ever releasing the steering wheel, a driver can utilize the Bluetooth technology to change a station, switch CDs or command the radio to play their favorite song. By using voice recognition technology, these Bluetooth computers can operate the car radio on voice command.

Bluetooth DVD

As well as with the radio and navigation systems, car computers can utilize Bluetooth technology to operate a backseat DVD system. By using voice technology or buttons on the side of the steering wheel, a driver can operate a DVD system in the back seat of their vehicle without compromising safety by removing their hands from the steering wheel. By recognizing voice commands, the Bluetooth DVD system can be operated and controlled. In conjunction with a Bluetooth DVD system, Bluetooth headphones are available as well. These headphones are wireless, eliminating the constraints and clutter of wires within the vehicle. By connecting to the DVD system, these headphones can utilize the Bluetooth technology to function wirelessly.
