Installing a Portable Air Conditioner
what you'll need
- Portable air conditioner
- Caulking gun
- Silicone caulk
- Scrap wood
- Weather stripping foam
- Drill
- Wood screws
- Tape measure
Although a portable air conditioner costs more in terms of price and energy consumption, it is a great option for homeowners in terms of mobility and convenience. Available as either stand-alone box-mounted models or window-mounted units, these ‘windowless’ air conditioners are easy to move around the house. They can be used in any room either as a stand-alone unit or to supplement cooling from another unit. Follow these steps to successfully install a portable air conditioner.
Step 1 – Choose a Location
A portable air conditioner dissipates hot air that will blow into the room, unless it is directed outdoors. To do this, select a location near a window so you can connect a vent hose to the air conditioner and run it outside. You do not need a very large window, a small one will suffice because the vent hose is around the same size as a dryer vent hose.
Also, make sure there is an electrical outlet nearby for you to plug your air conditioning unit into easily.
Step 2 – Install Vent Hose
Open your window to run the vent hose outside. Connect it to the air conditioner at one end and keep it as straight as possible when pulling it outdoors to ensure an uninterrupted airflow. Almost all models come with fittings that provide for an easy vent installation.
If your hose is not long enough to reach the window, either change the placement of the air conditioner or replace it with a longer hose.
Step 3 – Check Instructions Manual for Water Drainage Procedure
Once the hose is installed, check your instructions manual for the appropriate procedure for draining water. Some air conditioner units use a water bucket or pan that needs to be emptied frequently, while others have a small pump that circulates water over the condenser where it evaporates, causing the vent to emit hot air.
Step 4 – Close Window
Pull your window shut until it rests lightly on the hoses without crushing them. You may need to prop it up with wood scraps to hold it firmly in place. If there are any gaps around the hoses, fill them with weather-stripping foam or use a caulking gun with silicone caulk. This will prevent any cool air from escaping the room. Turn your air conditioner on and enjoy cool air.
Step 5 - Installing a Window Mounted Portable Air Conditioner
- Select a window around the same size as the air conditioner.
- Install the mounting bracket that comes with it by sliding it into the windowsill and securing the screws that come with it.
- Slide the air conditioner into the bracket, tilting it back a bit to ensure good drainage.
- Drill holes in the walls and attach the air conditioner extensions into them.
- Close the window and mark where it meets the air conditioner.
- Apply a layer of weather stripping tape along the marked line, and anywhere else along the sides of the air conditioner to prevent cool air from escaping.
- Plug the switch into an electrical outlet and set the temperature to enjoy your portable appliance.
