Installing a Wall Oven Under a Gas Cooktop

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Shelf or 2 by 4 inch runners
  • 3 or 4 wired cable (dependant on region)
  • U.L. listed conduit connector
  • Conduit box
  • Drill
  • Screws (supplied)

Installing a wall oven over a gas cook top is a wonderful, space saving idea for your kitchen. This is a rather complex job and will require an extra person for assistance and an intermediate knowledge of DIY skills. The task should take no more than three hours to complete. Consider hiring a professional installation team if you don’t have the required skills to carry out this procedure.

Step One - Choose the Correct Unit

Make sure that the wall oven you choose is approved for installation under a counter. There should be specification sheets with this information supplied by your retailer. Both the wall unit and the gas cook top need to have the same cut-out width to provide ease of installation.

Step Two - Shut off Electrical Supply

Make sure the power to the oven branch circuit is shut down. As an additional safety measure, the circuit breaker for the kitchen area can also be turned off. This will act as a preventative measure against electrical shocks.

Step Three - Cut Wall Space

Using the technical data provided, cut the wall space to the exact measurements and clear the area of any debris creating during the process. Take the runners and install them into position following the suggested measurements. A template for this part of the installation is usually provided, although a simple design can be made using paper. Make sure the runners are able to hold approximately 450 pounds in weight and are firmly secured using the screws provided.

Step Four - Install Wall Oven

Remove the wall oven from the packaging, taking care to remove any brackets or transit bolts. Using the 3 or 4 cabled wire, connect the individual wire cores to their respective connection points as detailed on the technical data sheets. Install the U.L. conduit connector and conduit box two inches below the shelving point. Remove the oven doors and place them away from the working area to prevent damage. Slide the oven into the cut out space created. If gas piping work needs to be undertaken do not carry out the work yourself. Consult a specialist to complete this stage of the process.

Step Five – Drill

Take a drill and make the suggested holes in the cabinet frame. These holes should drive through the mount and onto the front frame. Take the screws that came with the kitchen appliances and attach the oven into place. This should secure the oven to the top of the cabinet.

Step Six - Trim

There should still be two screws left over. Take these and attach the bottom trim to the oven. The electricity can be turned back on to the oven and the appliance slid into the space. You can now reattach the oven doors.

Step Seven - Test

Check to make sure that everything is working properly. If installation appears to be incorrect, turn off the electricity again and retrace the wiring to check for errors. A troubleshooting guide will also be supplied with the appliances and can be referred to as well.
