Installing an Aluminum Door Threshold

A door threshold is a must-have for any household. It is a strip of metal that is placed beneath the door and it offers protection against dust, rain, insects, rodents, drafts and mold. If you door does not have the threshold installed properly, the door-frame can rot. Rainwater causes wooden doorframes to decay and metallic frames to rust. There are many different types of door thresholds. The most common are aluminum and wooden thresholds. Some thresholds are fixed, while others are adjustable, depending on how they are installed. This article is a guideline on how to install a fixed aluminum door threshold.

Step 1: Take Measurements

Before you install the threshold, rad the manufacturer’s guide thoroughly. Next, examine the old door threshold because it will make your work easier. If this is the case, you will not need to take any measurements. Instead, carefully remove the old one and use it as a template for the new one. After you’ve removed the threshold, clean the area under the door thoroughly and let it dry thoroughly. Next, examine the threshold to see if it can be repaired. If it has rotted, see how to repair the damage before you install a new one.

If is no threshold, use a tape measure to determine the width of the door and the size of the space under the door. Once you’ve determined the dimensions, place your aluminum threshold on a flat surface and cut it to size. Use a hacksaw. Also, be sure that the threshold will allow the door to open properly and will not rub on the floor or carpet. Lastly, be sure that you do not leave too much space under the door.

Step 2: Adhesive

Inspect the packaging with the aluminum threshold to check for screws. Some thresholds have holes cut in them already, while others don’t. In any case, an aluminum door threshold should always be installed using screws with anchors to hold them.

Be sure to use construction adhesive that is water and weather-resistant. If you are certain that the area is clean, apply it to the surface under the door and install the threshold. Wipe off any excess adhesive and then leave the setup to dry.

Step 3: Aligh Threshold

If the threshold is to be screwed, be sure that the area under the door is clean. If the floor is cemented, use a masonry bit to drill holes. Align the threshold carefully to the holes, and then screw the threshold on tightly.

Ensure that the edge of the aluminum door threshold is facing the outside of the building and slopes away from the interior of the home to keep away water. Use waterproof caulk to the grooves that are left at the ends of the threshold, where it meets the doorjambs.

Once you have completed your work, allow everything to dry for at least one day. This will help to ensure that everything remains in place.
