Installing and Using a Touch Screen LCD Monitor

by DoItYourself Staff

A touch screen LCD monitor is both an output and input device. This means that is does not only work as a computer display (output), but it also replaces the functions of the keyboard and the mouse (input). However, it may still be used with touch-screen compatible keyboards and mice. Touch screen technology has been around since 1971, but its wide usage has only been made available to consumers after years of research. Here are some valuable pieces of information for installing and using a touch screen LCD monitor.

Installation Procedures

The installation procedures for the monitor may vary depending on the brand and model. Written below are some of the basic steps.

In order to install the device, the computer has to be turned off first. Unpack the device and determine if all parts are available. The touch screen monitor usually comes with all or some of these parts: AC adapter, VGA video cable, connector (PS/2, USB, or serial cable) for mouse simulation, and installation CD.  If some of the parts are not included in the package, be sure to obtain the recommended brands and models from a supply store.

Connect the video cable to the computer video port, the mouse input (USB, serial or PS/2) cable to a given port in the computer, and the AC adaptor to the power supply. If these devices are not readily connected to the touch screen LCD monitor, make sure to connect them at the back part of the device first before connecting them to the computer and the power supply.

When the connections are in place, turn on the computer. The computer will instantly detect the hardware and will offer some instructions on the screen. Simply follow the steps. If a CD comes along with the device, place it in the disk drive and follow the instructions prompted on the screen. While some touch screen units are plug-and-play, some may require you to install the software from the CD and install the compatible drivers as well. If the driver is not compatible with the operating system on the computer, make sure to download the correct driver.

Using the Touch Screen LCD Monitor

Be sure to test the touch screen to ensure that the controls are correct. Use a fingertip to point at an option or control on the screen much like a mouse. If the touch screen does not suite the user’s preference, configure it using the software provided by the manufacturer. To use the unit properly, make sure to read the user’s guide in detail. Read or watch the tutorials provided in the CD as well.

Touch screen LCD monitors may also come with a light pen. Instead of using a finger, use this pen instead as it will minimize cleaning. Most often, the fingertips become dirty or oily. Dirt and oil may blur the screen and require a lot of cleaning. When cleaning the screen, use a damp soft and lint-free cloth to wipe off any contaminant. Never spray liquids directly on the screen.
