Installing Case Switches into a Motherboard
what you'll need
- Screwdriver
- Pliers
- Flashlight
When you are building a computer there are various things you need to know such as how to install case switches into a motherboard. There are so many connections associated with a computer and the way it works that it can seem quite daunting. However, it is quite straightforward if you follow some simple steps. As long as you ensure that your motherboard is compatible for your computer then you shouldn’t have a problem.
Step 1 – Preparation for Installation
Before you start to install the case switches into your motherboard, the first thing you need to do is check the manual and work out where the connections are and where the switches should be located. If you can find out where they go and what is required then this will make the job a lot easier. Next, turn off the power feeding into your computer from the mains. This is important when looking at any electrical item for safety reasons. There are a variety of different switches that are plugged into a group of pins directly on your motherboard. These include a reset switch, and the most crucial is the on and off switch for your computer.
Step 2 – Finding Where the Switches Plug in
On a lot of computers the pins where you can plug the switches in are found in the lower right of the motherboard. Sometimes it can be hard to find exactly where to plug these in, but the aid of a flashlight should assist you as it will be dark inside your computer case.
Step 3 – Connect the Power Switch
On most systems the power switch attaches to the motherboard. This is as opposed to some that actually fit to the power socket. You need to find the connector that is relevant and attach any wires that are coming out of the switch to it.
Step 4 – Connect the Turbo Switch if needed
This is not the case with all computers, but if you find that you have a turbo switch then you should plug it into the motherboard. In newer computers this switch doesn’t do much at all. However, in older machines the system may not work correctly if the turbo switch has not been installed properly.
Step 5 – Connect the Reset Switch
Find the appropriate place on the motherboard to install the reset switch. This can be done by attaching the wires for the reset switch to the relevant pin connector. The switch is separate from the others and is not linked, so you can connect it any way you want.
Step 6 – Connect the Keylock Switch
The majority of motherboards include a connector that has five pins in it. This is used for attaching the keylock switch. A keylock switch in turn is used to control various electrical circuits and is very important for your computer.
Step 7 – Test the Switches
Finally, once you have installed these switches you should ensure that the power is turned back on to the computer you are working on. Once it is turned on you should test the computer to make sure it is functioning correctly and quickly. If you follow the guidelines then installing switches into a motherboard is not that difficult.
