New pet doors now come with a collar that is worn by your pet and acts as the key to allow ingress and egress. Electronic pet doors also come with templates that make them easy to install using a few simple tools.
Step 1 – Preparation
Use the template that comes with the pet door kit to determine the ideal place of installation. Remember to only buy a pet door that is of the right size for your pet because pet doors come in a variety of sizes to accommodate all sizes. It is also best to measure the overall width and height of your pet before deciding what type of pet door to purchase. Take into consideration the growth factor as well. You want to buy a pet door that will be useful once your pet grows and is fully mature.
Step 2 – Mark the Template on the Door and Drill
Place the template in the desired location in the door and use a pencil to trace the outline. It is best to leave a small X mark on all four corners of the outline.
Use an electric drill to make a small hole on the middle of the X mark on the four corners of the template outline. Remember to wear safety goggles or glasses when using power tools.
Step 3 – Cut and Install the Door
Use a jigsaw to cut the outline of the pencil mark starting from the drilled hole on the X marks. Start in one corner and work your way towards the next. Perform Steps 2 to 4 on both the interior and exterior side of the door.
Install the outer frame of the pet door to the door exterior and secure using the supplied screws. Next, install the inner frame on the door interior and secure using screws. Tighten all the screws using a screwdriver.
Step 4 – Connect Power Cord
Connect the power cord to a nearby electrical outlet when necessary. It is best to leave a nominal amount of slack on the power cord to facilitate the normal opening and closing movements of the door.
Step 5 – Test the Pet Door
Grab the collar that comes with the electronic pet door kit and test the door for proper efficiency. You may need to further train your pet to use the newly installed pet door.
An electronic pet door can be purchased at the nearest home improvement store. You can ask for assistance from the store representative if you are not sure about the size of the door that will best fit your pet. Choosing the right kind of electronic pet door is a great way to allow your pets to leave and enter the house without physically opening the entire door.
