Installing Metal Halide Lighting for Aquariums
what you'll need
- Metal halide lights
- Screwdriver
- Pliers
- Tape measure
- Notepad and pen
There are several steps that must be adhered to if you to set up a decent aquarium and the use of metal halide lighting can be particularly beneficial. Knowing what is required for a full metal halide installation will make your aquarium plans much easier to implement.
Step 1 – Assess Purpose
You must initially consider what the purpose the metal halide lighting will be put to help you decide the type that will be necessary. In addition to the size of the aquarium, you must consider the creature that you are creating a home for. Some plants, insects, reptiles and animals require more light and heat than others. With this in mind, you should undertake some research to ensure that you get lights of the correct wattage and that produce the right amount of heat.
Step 2 – Inspect Aquarium
On the basis that you already have the aquarium in which you intend to install the metal halide lighting, you must begin by measuring the area where the light will go. This process will help to ensure that you obtain a light of the correct size. You should also make a note of the brand of the aquarium so that you can determine whether there is a light available from the same manufacturer. If so, it would be prudent to use this for the purpose of lighting the aquarium. The lids of many aquariums will often already comprise the relevant fasteners necessary to enable you fix any lights or fans in place. Check for these and make a note of the type of fasteners that they are so that you obtain components to match.
Step 3 – Remove Existing Lights
If there are lights already in place, these need to be removed before you will be able to install the metal halide lighting. Begin by disconnecting the power supply and removing the lid from the aquarium so that you can gain access to the relevant area. A lighting system that is clipped into place can simply be removed by hand, while the relevant tool can be used to remove fasteners that are securing it.
Step 4 – Install Lights
The most basic types of light can simply be clamped to the lid of the aquarium or to the sides of the tank, others will require more effort to install. You must begin by deciding how far into the aquarium you want the lights to reach. If it is necessary to fit the metal halide lighting so that it fits deeper within the aquarium, it will be necessary to initially fit it to a base that will enable you to do this. Attach the light to the support base before fitting it in place. Turn the lid of the aquarium upside down and lay it on a flat surface so that it is easier to work. Lay the lighting in the correct position and secure it in place with the fasteners.
