Installing New Fire Sprinkler Heads
what you'll need
- Sprinkler head
- Ladder
- Screwdriver or wrench
An important part of any home fire sprinkler system is the fire sprinkler heads. Fire sprinklers are important tools in any home since they are your first line of defense against a full-blown fire consuming your house. However, the functionality of your fire sprinkler deteriorates in proportion with the age of your fire sprinkler head. This is the main reason why you need to be on a look out for outdated and worn out sprinkler heads. You can have someone annually check your sprinkler heads to see if they operate properly. But if you don’t want to spend the extra cash, you can do the job yourself.
Step 1 - Check Your Sprinkler
The first step is to see what kind of sprinkler head you have on your fire sprinkler. You need to know this information before you can go to the hardware store to buy the replacement sprinkler head. You have to make sure that the sprinkler head you buy matches the old one that you are replacing. To help you with picking the right head, simply take note of your sprinkler’s cylinder color. Also, look for the model of your sprinkler. Present the information to the sales attendant at your hardware store.
Step 2 – Secure the Necessary Preparations
Before you do anything with your fire sprinklers, you need to turn off the water supply. This will prevent you from getting drenched in water. If your house has high ceilings and the sprinkler is set way up high, you may need to use a ladder to reach your sprinkler. Pick a ladder that will provide you with the proper support lest you fall off.
Step 3 - Remove the Old Sprinkler Head
The sprinkler head is covered by a cap. Pop out the cap and remove it. Unscrew the sprinkler head. Depending on the model of your fire sprinkler, you may have to use a wrench to remove the sprinkler head.
Step 4 - Attach the New Sprinkler Head
Position the new sprinkler head so that it fits properly and snugly. Once you have done that, you will be able to screw the sprinkler head into the fire sprinkler assembly. You want it to be screwed in as tightly as possible. If the sprinkler head is not placed properly in the assembly, the fire sprinkler will not work. Replace the sprinkler head cap you removed earlier. Turn on the water supply.
Fire sprinklers are essential fixtures in your home. Fire sprinklers will prevent small fires from spreading out of control. Make sure to follow the instructions and do not make any unauthorized modification which can compromise or hinder the proper function of your fire sprinkler.
