Installing pet doors in your backyard door can provide a convenient way for pets to enter and exit a house as necessary. Some homes come with a door installed, but many do not. If you need to install a door, you will need to fit a pet door based on the size of your dog or cat. The key to success is taking accurate measurements before you cut the hole for the pet door. This project can be done in a relatively short time with basic tools.

Step 1 -- Measure For Your Pet Door

Your new pet door should be approximately 2 to 3 inches higher than the height of your pet's shoulders. Use your tape measure to record the distance from the top of your pet's shoulder to the floor. Then, add 2 to 3 inches to allow for clearance. This should be the height of the finished pet door. Mark this height on your backyard door with a couple of pencil marks.

Step 2 -- Select Pet Door Kit

Pet doors are sold as kits that include the required hardware, a fitted frame and screws and bolts. Most come with flexible flaps that your pet pushes through while going in and out of the house. Many pet door kits now come with a template to help you correctly cut the hole in your door with your saw. Select one that fits both your pet's size and your own needs. For example, many door kits now come with added locks to prevent intruders from entering through your pet door.

Step 3 -- Cut Pet Door Space

Remove your backyard door off its hinges and lay it flat to allow easy access for your project. Using your template and measurements as a guide, make a pencil outline where you will be cutting through your backyard door. Also clearly mark where you will need to add any screws. Carefully saw out this section with your jig saw, and smooth any jagged wood edges with your metal rasp or with coarser-grit sandpaper.

Step 4 -- Add Screw Holes

Drill any holes where you will need to screw your pet door in place. Most screws included with pet door kits require 1/2 inch drilled holes. Make sure each of the holes is drilled cleanly through the door.

Step 5 -- Fit and Secure Your Pet Door

Lay your pet door and its frame over the hole you just cut in the backyard door. Many pet door frames have level adjustment mechanisms that allow you to make sure the pet door fits as snugly as possible. Screw the pet door itself in place first, followed by the frame and flap. Use the appropriate screws and bits to keep it in place. Replace your backyard door on its hinges, and you are ready for your pet to enjoy their freedom to your backyard.
