Installing Security Cameras on Your Driveway Gate

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Wireless security camera
  • Small television
  • Drill
  • Two wall grommets
  • Silicone caulking

One of the places that you should install a security camera is at your driveway gate. This is the first point of entry into your home. When someone comes to your gate, you will be able to see who it is before you go out to open it.

Installing a security on your driveway gate is made much easier now that the costs have come down. As the prices decrease, the quality of the cameras has increased. The image quality is much better and the cameras have gotten smaller. Add to that, a lot of outside security cameras are now wireless, making installation much easier.

Step One - Position Camera at Driveway Gate

Wireless surveillance devices are amazing pieces of technology. You do not have to worry about a lot of the installation steps you would with cameras connected by wires. You do not need to install a new post, dig a trench, or lay the wire. You can easily place the camera anywhere on your driveway gate. However, the best possible place for your camera is on the side of the gate with a view of the driver.

Step Two - Install Camera to Gate

The camera will come with its own mounting hardware. This is usually in the form of a base that you screw into a solid area. After you have found the area on your gate where you want the camera, you can install it. Locate the holes for the screws onto the gate. Drill the holes with a carbide tip. Drill slowly so you do not break the drill bit. Position the camera in place and screw into place.

Step Three - Install Receiver

You will need to put the receiver on the outside of the house in order to get the best reception. Place it near the foundation so you can drill into the home and run the wire to your television. Place the receiver up against the wall and screw in tightly.

Step Four - Drill Hole into Home

Drill a 1/2-inch hole into the side of the house near the level of the floor. Drill this from the inside going out so you know exactly how high you want it on the wall.

Step Five - Thread Wire Through Wall

Place a wire grommet onto the end of the wire and slide it down to the end. Thread the end of the wire through the wall and pull it through into the home. Snug the wall grommet to the exterior of the home and apply silicone caulking around it to keep it water proof.

Step Six - Connect to Television

On the interior of the home, slide another wall grommet onto the end of the wire until it secures tightly to the wall. Apply a small bead of caulking underneath the lip of the grommet so it secures to the wall and forms an airtight seal. Connect end of the wire into the television you are using for the camera.
