Installing Steam Shower Lights

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Shower lights
  • Light bulbs
  • Saw to cut glass, tile or other materials
  • Wire cutters/strippers
  • Wire nuts

The shower lights you put in your steam shower will vary based on the size, shape, and material of your shower. One thing you should remember when you wire steam shower lights is that the steam generator for this type of shower will need its own electrical circuit.

Step 1- Designing Your Steam Shower

If you purchase a modular steam shower, it will most likely come with shower lights, but if you’re designing your own, you’ll need to design the shower appropriately. Even if you’re simply converting an old shower into a steam shower unit, you’ll still need to include steam lights in the plan. Think about how many lights you want and where you’d like them placed in your shower. You have a choice between LED or other types of light bulbs in many different colors.

Step 2- Holes for Shower Lights

Whether you’re building your steam shower from scratch or renovating a current shower, you’ll need to cut holes in either tile or glass to make room for your lights. Make sure you’ve lined up all your plumbing and water pipes before you make any cuts for your shower lights. This way you won’t put any shower lights too close to the faucets or shower heads.

Step 3- Safety

Before you begin any wiring on your steam shower and shower lights, you need to make sure your power is turned off. Electric shocks can be extremely dangerous, so you need to make sure you’re not dealing with any live wires. Also, when cutting glass or tile, you need to wear the proper safety gear, such as goggles and a face mask to keep you safe while operating with the saw.

Step 4- Connect the Wiring

A steam generator needs its own electric circuit, so make sure you’re aware of this when wiring your shower lights. Wires are generally color coded so you can easily find which ones should be connected. Strip the wires, exposing about a 1/2 inch of wiring to be connected with wire nuts. Once all of the wires have been connected, you can install the lights and set them into the wall.

Step 5- Try Your Shower

Once your shower lights have been installed and the rest of the steam shower is ready, you’ll be able to try it out. If you’re not good at wiring shower lights, you can look at picture electrical diagrams or buy shower lights that are LED and battery operated. That way you won’t have any trouble and you can move the lights to whatever position you want them. Don’t forget when you’re purchasing steam shower lights to purchase the kind of lights that can withstand the water, heat, and steam they will encounter. You have a lot of different choices when it comes to shower lights, because there are a lot of different varieties. Find something that works for you and matches the scheme of your bathroom or décor.
