what you'll need
- Tin ceiling tiles
- Chalk line
- Cornices or wood crown molding
- Safety Ladder
- Ceiling nails
- Metal shears
Tin ceiling tiles are used to create a Victorian-inspired theme to any part of the house. As the name would probably suggest, these pre cut tiles are made of pressed thin and should be handled carefully to avoid nasty cuts due to the sharp edges of the tiles. It would be best to take the necessary precautions and wear thick safety gloves when handling pressed metal sheets. It is also recommended that the ceiling tiles are painted prior to installation. You can also buy pre painted ceiling tiles at the nearest hardware or home improvement store but these are considerably more expensive than the norm. Also remember that tin ceiling tiles are ideally affixed to building ply or timber battens for ease of installation. Install building ply to your existing ceiling before fastening the ceiling tiles. If you happen to have timber ceilings in your home then you can easily append ceiling tiles with no additional work needed.
Step 1 – Measure the Ceiling Area
Locate the center of the ceiling and mark with a chalk line. It would be best to divide the entire ceiling surface into half and further divide each area into quarters. Remember to work from the center of the room and work your way outwards for a more accurate measurement.
Step 2 – Install Cornice
Check with the manufacturer of your preferred ceiling tiles. Most would recommend installing a cornice after drawing out the central line markings. This will ensure that the flange opening will be nailed to the plywood and the cornice edge is securely attached to the wall with aluminum strips or strapping supports.
Step 3 – Lay the Panels to the Floor
Lay the tin panels to the floor to get an idea on the design and pattern of the preferred metal sheets. Take note of the nibs or buttons that help fit the metal panels together. The part of the sheet with the exposed cut should be facing towards the wall where it will be hidden by cornice or wood crown molding.
Step 4 – Attach the Metal Sheets
Use a safety ladder for ample reach towards the ceiling. Use nails to attach the sheet to the ceiling. Start from the center of the wall-paying attention to the chalk line markings and work your way towards the edges. Pay special attention to the panel lapping so as not to rudely disrupt the pattern of the metal sheets. Remember that the type of nail to use will all depend on the recommendations of the manufacturer. Only use nails as specified to avoid damaging the metal sheets and creating an unsightly look on the pattern of the tin ceiling tiles. Use metal shears to work your way around holes on lighting fixtures.
When installing tin ceiling tiles, take time to thoroughly read and understand the manufacturer’s instructions to achieve a more professional look.
