Interior Basement Waterproofing: 3 Solutions

Interior basement waterproofing is something that is critical for your house if you want to stop your basement from flooding. These sorts of problems occur when there is either a build up of water leaking down into your basement, or a blockage in a pipe somewhere that is stopping water from going anywhere and therefore accumulating in this area. If you waterproof your basement then it doesn’t necessarily mean that you should just put on the waterproof material or paint once in a while and expect everything to be okay. If you undertake this process then you should be aware that this needs to be done regularly so as to maintain the basement and how it looks. Waterproofing your basement is beneficial as it will add to the value of your property and maintain the basement to prevent damage.

1.French Drains

Problems that happen outside the house have a direct result on your basement as leaks from pipes and poor drainage mean that this can get flooded. There is nothing worse than a drainage system that you knew about but never really thought about getting fixed, leading to a basement full of water and damage. Installing a French drain in order to keep your basement dry is something that is relatively simple. You just have to dig a trench in your garden and around the house. You should then fill it up with gravel and level it out. This type of drain is designed to move water away from the problematic area. In order to reduce costs then you should try to install this yourself. The French drain will hopefully serve its purpose and direct water away so that the basement is dry at all times.  

2. Using Waterproof Paint

As well as work you can do outside for waterproofing the basement, you can also do work inside to prevent flooding and wet conditions. You can make use of some waterproof paint and use it in conjunction with a waterproof primer. Initially, though, before putting the paint on the walls you should fill in any gaps or cracks on the wall. This damage can occur due to leaking water from pipes for example. Once you have smoothed over any cracks in the wall you can start applying the paint on to the surface along with the primer and allow it to dry. This is a good solution to waterproof your basement.

3. Improve the Drainage System

Sometimes your basement can flood if you have problems with your drainage system and have pipes that have become blocked. You should make sure that pipes are cleared of any blockages first off and then once this is done you have to maintain this to ensure that pipes do not get blocked again. Check out the landscape of your garden in addition to make sure that there are no areas where water can build up like in slopes or other places like this. If this happens then the excess water has nowhere to go and leaks down into your basement. By improving the drainage system in your house inside and outside you will have a much better chance of stopping problems in the basement of your house.
