Ionic Air Purifier Repair

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Safety Glasses
  • Screwdriver
  • Assorted Wrenches
  • Sponge
  • Dish Soap

Once you take your ionic air purifier out of the box and install the base, there is not a lot of user repair that can be done. It may be necessary to tighten a screw now and then, but the biggest thing that can be done to keep an ionic air purifier working is to keep it clean.

This should be done anytime the indicator light is on, or if you hear an unusual buzzing or humming coming from the unit. The steps for cleaning a purifier are outlined below, and should apply to most brands of ionic air purifiers.

Step 1: Remove the Power

Before you do any kind of work on an ionic air purifier, completely unplug it from the wall. If there is a danger of the plug being put back in the socket, keep the end of the cord near you so that it cannot be mistaken for some other device. Electricity is the biggest danger to someone working on an ionic purifier, but removing the source of power will prevent accidents.

Step 2: Installing New Parts

If you have a new purifier and are still assembling parts, follow the directions given with ionizer. Most brands come fully assembled, but some may require putting some of the pieces together, or installing a base for the unit to stand on. This process will differ significantly from one brand and model to the next. Any assembly that is required will be provided with a complete set of simple instructions.

Step 3A: Remove the Blades

On top of the unit, release the mechanism that holds the blades in place. This may be a twist off wing-nut style connector, or it may be a simple levered release switch. No matter what brand you are repairing, the release mechanism will be clearly marked because cleaning the blades has to be done often.

Step 3B: Clean the Base Unit

Clean the unit with a damp sponge, after the blades are removed. Be careful to avoid getting water inside the ionizer. Allow the base to dry completely before the blades are installed or power is returned to the unit.

Step 4: Cleaning the Blades

Use a soapy water mixture and a sponge to clean the blades. Do not scrub them, wipe gently. Use even strokes over the entire blade surface. The cleaning process may require a few attempts to remove all of the built up debris. If so, rinse the sponge thoroughly before beginning again. Using a dirty sponge could have a reverse effect, pushing particles deeper into the blades.

After cleaning, rinse the blades free of soap with a sponge and clean water. Most brands do not recommend immersing the blades in water.

Step 5: Notes on Wet Blades

Before they are put back in the ionic air purifier, the blades need to dry completely. Most companies suggest waiting at least 24 hours. Failure to let the blades dry can result in the unit not turning on, or even electrocution.
