iPod FAQs by Alden Smith

The iPod, the sleek little MP3 player from Apple, is one of the best ways to carry your music around and enjoy photo sharing with family and friends.  Because of its uniqueness, we offer a list of frequently asked questions about the iPod to make your ownership more enjoyable and easier to understand.

Is An iPod Compatible With My Computer?

The iPod, although originally designed for the Mac computer, is now compatible with both the Mac and the PC.  You must be running WinXP or Windows 2000 on a PC, and OSX on a Mac to use the iPod.

What Are My Computer System's Requirements?

You will need to be running Windows Service Pack 2 and have either FireWire capabilities or have USB 1.1 - 2.0 installed.  You will also need the latest release of iTunes and, if interested in album art and photo sharing, access to Adobe Photoshop or Elements.

What Jukebox Software is Needed?

To fully maximize your use of the iPod features, you need iTunes for Mac or iTunes for Windows.  iTunes is a free download that allows you to "rip" tracks from CDs into MP3 or AAC format and download individual songs and albums from the Apple store.  Cost is minimal - a single song is .99 cents, and albums are $9.99.  Synchronization of your playlist is also possible when attaching the iPod to your computer. iTunes also has many other features, such as access to the Apple store and a long list of internet radio stations.

How Is Music Transferred From My Computer To My iPod?

Transfer is accomplished by connecting your iPod to the computer via a USB or FireWire cable, depending on your setup.  Using the latest release of iTunes, you can synchronize your playlists, add selected playlists or manually select what you wish to transfer.  iTunes has an intuitive interface that allows you to use multiple methods through a window pane in the iTunes screen.  iTunes will warn you if the capacity of your iPod has been reached, and it allows you to select your transfer preferences.

I Use A Mac.  Can My iPod Be Used On a PC?

At this time, the two operating systems are not compatible.  The iPod is configured for either Mac or PC, and the only way it is easily changed is by resetting factory configurations using iTunes 7.  Note that using an iPod for Mac on a PC, or an iPod for Windows on a Mac is not supported by Apple.  Although it may work to some extent, the file systems between a Mac and a PC are different.

What Audio Formats Does iPod Support?

The iPod uses the following formats:*

iPod can play songs encoded with these codecs:

    * MP3 (from 32 Kbps to 320 Kbps)
    * MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR)
    * AIFF *
    * WAV (with no compression)
    * The following require iPod software 1.3 or later:
         * M4A AAC *
         * M4P AAC (Protected) *
         * M4B AAC (iTunes Store Spoken Word files) *
    * The following requires iPod software 2.2 or later or iPod mini 1.1 or later:
          * Apple Lossless Encoder

Does an iPod Sound As Good As My CD Player?

Sound quality is comparable.  iPod uses earbud-style headphones that rely on Neodymium transducers. This rare earth magnet significantly enhances frequency response and overall sound quality, and is five times more powerful than regular cobalt, ceramic or aluminum drivers.  To ensure high quality, use a compression setting of 160 Kbytes, which is the default setting in iTunes, or higher when you "rip" tracks from your CD into MP3 format.   Always use 128 kbyte settings when ripping in MP4 format (AAC).

I Am Very Active.  Does An iPod Have Skip Protection?

The iPod uses technology designed for people with an active lifestyle.  It provides a memory cache of 20 minutes of skip protection.  The memory cache has no mechanical or moving parts. It uses this memory to cache 20 minutes of play time that is skip proof when running or working out.

Can I Connect The iPod To My Car Stereo System?

Most definitely.  There are several ways to do this, including using the CD changer outlet on your car stereo.  Most cars manufactured in the last decade have this feature.  You can use an extension cable with 3.5 mm stereo connectors on each end to connect the iPod to your car stereo system's auxiliary input. If your car doesn't have this feature, use a cassette adapter.

Can I Connect The iPod To My Home Stereo system?

Yes.  It attaches much the same way as it does in your vehicle.  With its powerful 60mw amplifier and a 20 hertz to 20K hertz frequency response, it allows you to use your own party mix.  After market adapters are available, and must be compatible with the 3.5mm headphone jack of the iPod.

The iPod is a very well designed, innovative MP3 player.  It has many uses besides just a personal audio player, and is designed with the end user in mind.  These FAQ's should help you get a handle on what your iPod can do for you.
