Is Batt or Blown-In Insulation Better for Your Attic?

by DoItYourself Staff

Whether you are building a new home or renovating your current home, you may need to know the difference between batt and blown in insulation for the purposes of insulating your attic. Both insulation systems come with certain negative and positive aspects, and it will be up to you to determine which type of insulation will work best for you.

Batt Insulation

Batt insulation is the type of insulation that comes in large fiberglass rolls. Although it is possible to create a very efficient seal with batts, it takes a great deal of patience and precision to make sure that all seams are insulated. Blown-in insulation typically creates an airtight seal in much less time. If sealed properly, however, batt insulation actually has the potential to create higher R-Values, meaning that heat transfer will be less, than with blown-in insulation.

Blown-In Insulation

Blown-in insulation, first and foremost, will typically need to be done by a professional. If you are hoping to complete the insulation of your attic by yourself, blown-in insulation may not be the best direction to go in. On the other hand, blown-in insulation generally creates a more efficient seal, and will generally produce good results after a relatively quick installation period.
