Is it possible to install a projector mount on a ceiling that has asbestos?

by DoItYourself Staff

The homeowner who wishes to install a theater projector mount in his ceiling, should always avoid disturbing asbestos. This includes drilling or cutting holes in ceilings to install projector mounts. When asbestos fibers are released into the air and are then inhaled, there is always the potential threat of respiratory carcinogens. Breathable friable fibers, such as those in textured ceilings, can be released into the air by pressures as light as those made from a person's hand. Non-friable fibers are released by drilling, sanding, etc.
