Is it possible to rewire a three way switch?

by DoItYourself Staff

It is not only possible to rewire a three-way switch; it is sometimes necessary. The wiring scheme you use will depend on the locations of the power source, the light (or receptacle) and the switches in this circuit. So, when one of these factors is changed, the wiring will often need to be changed also.

In rewiring your three-way switch, always refer to a wiring diagram that will instruct you as to the wiring option you should use. Wiring in the individual electrical boxes will be different for each type of wiring circuit you use: a) light-switch-switch, b) switch-light-switch, c) switch-switch-light, and d) switch-switch-light circuit.
