Is Upholstery Sewing Cheaper Than Buying New Furniture?

by DoItYourself Staff

The cost effectiveness of upholstery sewing depends greatly on the piece of furniture. If you have invested in high quality furniture, it will be worth reupholstering. On the other hand, if you have a cheap piece of furniture that has served its purposed, it may be cheaper to replace the piece rather than to reupholster it.

Another thing to consider is the type of piece being recovered due to the cost of the fabric you will need. A sofa will need a heavy durable upholstery like wool, which can be quite expensive. A vanity seat or a child's rocking chair will not need the most expensive elaborate fabric, which will make it inexpensive to cover.
