Jasmine Propagation Methods

by DoItYourself Staff

Jasmine is a very popular plant which grows in most climates around the world. There are many different varieties of Jasmine, but most of these are either climbers, trailers or woody shrubs. Jasmine plants are native to Europe, Africa and Asia and grow well in warm climates. Learning how to propagate Jasmine makes it much easier to grow the plant, there are also a few simple care tips which can make it much easier to grow the plant.

Methods of Propagation

There are many different methods of propagation for jasmine. The two most successful methods are sewing seeds and taking cuttings. Whichever method of propagation you choose the care techniques required will be the same.

Sewing Seeds

To improve success of the seeds germinating you should start them off in seed trays. Use compost and fertilizers to improve the chances of the seeds growing. Once the seeds have sprouted and are hardy enough they can then be either potted up into individual containers or planted out in the garden.

Cuttings

Another simple way of propagating jasmine is by growing it from cuttings. This is actually much easier than many people believe. Start by taking a cutting from a plant when there are no flowers on it. Then dip the cut end of the cutting into rooting powder. Place the cutting into compost and wait to see if they take.

If you're trying to grow jasmine by taking cuttings, you need to take more than you need. Not all of these cuttings will take and it's always better to have more than you need.

Ideal Conditions for Jasmine

Jasmine grows well in positions which have full sunlight although it also grows well in partial shade. They will grow well in moist soil which is well draining. Adding leaf mold to the soil can improve the conditions and make it much easier for the plant to grow.

Caring for Jasmine Plants

When planting jasmine plants in your garden you should ideally plant them between June and November. If you are planting more than one plant together, space them around 8 feet apart so that they have enough space to grow. Adding fertilizer will help the plant to grow.

When planting young plants you should tie them to supports to make sure they don't get damaged by the wind. Pinch out the tips of the plants to help stimulate growth.

Watering

It's important to water the plants regularly and you should make sure the soil is kept moist during the summer months. During the winter however you don't need to water quite as often. During spring you should add fertilizer to the water to help the plant along.

Watering is important but you shouldn't water the plant too often. Watering too often can cause root rot which can kill the plant.

Pruning

Regular pruning is required to prevent the jasmine plants from getting to big. Depending on the purpose of the plant you may need to use different pruning techniques. If you are trying to grow the plant to cover the ground, cut any stems growing upwards.
