Designing a kids closet can bring out the inner child in yourself, but we have to be careful not get too carried away and forget about safety. Closet storage is a great way to keep toys, clothes, and other items organized and out of the way, but these storage ideas can also cause harm, or even severe injury.
Rod Height
Having kids put away their own clothes is a step towards their development and to get them to take responsibility for their stuff. However, sometimes the rods in closets are quite high and hard for young children to reach. Use rods on a lower level so children can reach without having to climb on something unstable.
Shelf Placement
Organization of bulky clothes items, or toys is great when they can be kept out of sight and out from under the bed. Make sure shelves are built sturdy and will hold the items that will be set on it. Shelves that are too high, also lead to injury if the child has to climb to get to them.
Stay Clear of Stacking
Stacking boxes, crates, and other items is usually the way that people organize things in closets. In a kids closet, however, this is not a safe practice. Things can fall at a moments notice, and if you have a small child, they could sustain a head injury or some other serious trauma.
