Knowing if a Personal Air Conditioner is Energy Efficient

by DoItYourself Staff

The way to know if personal air conditioners are energy efficient is to check to see if it has an acceptable rating for energy efficiency.  Personal air conditioners that qualify for an acceptable energy star rating are those that use at least 10 percent less energy over a conventional model. Energy star rated air conditioners include timers for better temperature control, which allow for the minimum use of energy when cooling a room.

Contact the Manufacturer

There are two ways to determine if the personal air conditioner that you have is energy efficient. Those models that are Energy Star rated will have a yellow tag on them that indicate their rating. This rating is obtained by the manufacturer from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). An air conditioner that is not energy efficient will not receive this rating.  You can contact the manufacturer for information on the model that you own to determine its energy star rating.

Go to EPA.gov

The EPA maintains information on qualified energy efficient air conditioners, as well as other energy dependent equipment. This information can be found by going to the EnergyStar.gov website and pulling down rating information for energy star rated air conditioners. If the model that you own does not appear on the EPA list, it is not a qualified energy efficient personal air conditioner.
