Learn How to Sew Headbands
what you'll need
- Elastic strip
- Fabric
- Thread
- Needle
- Sewing Machine (optional)
- Pin
You can learn how to sew headbands, even if you don’t have a sewing machine available. Simple to make, you can create headbands for gifts or for yourself.
Getting the Materials Ready for Headbands
Before you begin, find a long piece of elastic which fits around your head, but isn’t too loose. The elastic band should be slightly smaller than your actual head measurement. A long strip of your desired fabric will cover this elastic. You also need thread and a needle or a sewing machine. You will also need a pin to help you connect the headband at the end.
How to Sew and Finish Headbands
- Take the elastic and place it on the fabric, about 1/2 inch from the edge.
- Fold the fabric over the elastic and sew the edges of the fabric together. A sewing machine will do an even job, but since this headband bunches up, hand stitches will work too.
- Pin and pull the elastic’s edges together; sew the elastic edges together.
- Tuck the fabric into itself and your headband is ready.
You can sew headbands for any occasion, using different fabrics. Create a small headband and use it as a scrunchie too.
