LED Lighting Fixtures for Home Use

by DoItYourself Staff
LED's, Light Emitting Diodes, can be very useful as lighting fixtures in the home. They come in any color and once in place, almost never need replacing. Most people are familiar with the rope lighting used to decorate homes at Christmas. Unlike the incandescent bulbs that we are used to, LED's emit a cool white light. They are blue, rather than yellow, and using them as accent or indirect lighting is a good way to start. A warning: since LED's are a direct current rather than alternating current like the electricity we use now, it is important that the bulbs we screw into our lamps come with their own built-in converter.

Indirect Lighting

The best way to use LED lighting is as indirect lighting under cupboards and cabinets to increase illumination in places like the bathroom and kitchen. These are places where you need good lighting for task work. You can also replace spot lighting with LED's in difficult-to-reach places for long lasting light.

Safety

Placing LED's in hard to reach places, such as a dark stairway or closet, will greatly improve their safety. You can use them for backyard lighting and pool lighting, and along the edges of walkways. For flashlights you can rely on, modern LED's mean no more dead batteries.

Mood Lighting and Decorating

For mood lighting, flame-less candles come with multicolored holders to replace halogen bulbs in your track lighting that never melt down. For decoration, you can hang a display of multicolored lights on a wall.

The quality of LED's is improving all the time. Start slow, but do start. Personalize your environment with energy efficient bulbs and ropes, or add a strobe or two. Have fun.
