Life Expectancy Of Ten Home Components
Home components are also known as home appliances. Each has a different life expectancy that is based on the frequency of use. Keep in mind that these numbers are only estimates and that they correspond to proper operation as per the instructions of each machine's manufacturer.
- Air Cooling Systems - Depending on the type of cooling system, life expectancy is between 12 to 25 years, with whole house systems on the short end and gas air chillers on the higher end of the range.
- Heating Systems - Depending on the type of heating system, they are replaced between 10 and 12 years of age.
- Refrigerator - Refrigerators are one of the longer lasting home appliances. Small dorm-style refrigerators only last approximately 5 years, but standard size large refrigerators have a life expectancy of 15 to 20 years.
- Microwave Ovens - Microwave ovens have a life expectancy of approximately 10 years, but are often replaced much more frequently, on average 4 to 5 years after being purchased.
- Washing Machine - Top-loading washing machines can last around 15 years, while front-loading models may only last 10.
- Clothes Dryer - Clothes dryers have a life expectancy of approximately 12 to 15 years.
- Dishwasher - Dishwashers may need to be replaced after 10 years of use.
- Cooktop - Electric cooktops or ranges can last around 15 years, while gas models are expected to work properly for up to 20 years.
- Water Heater - Tank water heaters have a life expectancy of 15 to 30 years, while tankless units may last 20 to 30 years.
- Garbage Disposal - Garbage disposals have an average life expectancy of 10 years.
