Light Problems? Checking The Refrigerator Door Switch

by DoItYourself Staff

The refrigerator door switch is a simple push-button that controls the operation of the refrigerator light. When functioning properly, the light will turn off when the switch is depressed and turn on when it is released.

Testing The Refrigerator Door Switch

The switch is usually located on the bottom half of the refrigerator and towards the right. Open the refrigerator and manually depress the button. If the light turns off then it is operating properly.

If the light doesn’t turn off, try cleaning the switch. Using a dry rag, gently wipe the switch and the area around, looking for debris and dried or sticky liquid.

If the clean switch still doesn't turn off the light, remove the trim and remove the switch using a screwdriver. Use a voltmeter to test the resistance of the switch. It should read 0 or "open" when it is depressed. If it does not read "open," the switch should be replaced.
