Magnetic Water Softeners

Magnetic water softeners are relatively new to the market and treat water differently than traditional water softeners.

Determining water hardness is quite simple:

  • The amount of dissolved sediment in the water is what determines the hardness
  • Water that contains 3.5 grains or more of sediment is considered hard. Grain count above 10 is considered very hard

How Magnetic Water Softeners Work

Traditional water softeners remove calcium and magnesium from water through a filtering process or thru electricity or water pressure. When these minerals are removed from the water, they are replaced by sodium ions. The sodium cannot generally be detected in the water’s taste.

With magnetic water softeners the water is not filtered. In fact, magnetic water softeners do not remove any minerals from the hard water. They work by stopping the scale from forming in the water prior to being distributed throughout the pipes by conveying an electrical charge through the hard water as it passes through a magnetic field.

Effects of Magnetic Water Softeners

Magnetic water softeners are cost effective and will alleviate maintenance by deterring hard minerals from forming on the bottom of a water heater. The best magnetic water softeners will run the water through several times and have a very strong magnetic field.  They also make water more palatable.
