Make a Door Draft Guard in 5 Steps Make a Door Draft Guard in 5 Steps
A door draft guard will prevent heat from escaping in the winter and cool air from escaping in the summer. You can purchase pre-fabricated draft guards in a variety of styles, but they are just as cheap and easy to make for yourself. Here’s what you need to do.
Step 1- Create a Tube
Using the no sew bonding material create a tube with the fabric. The no sew tape is the easiest method for this. You just place the tape along the edge and use an iron to bond the other side of the fabric to the tape. You can use a traditional thread and needle if you prefer. Which ever method you choose you need to sew the two longer sides together to form a hollow tube.
Step 2- Insulate the Tube
Use the pillow filling or whatever other insulating material you’ve chosen and stuff the tube. Use the weights throughout as you stuff, making sure the weight is evenly distributed. The insulation needs to be packed well so the air can’t escape through the draft guard.
Step 3- Close It Up
Once you have an adequate amount of insulation stuffed you will need to close the ends. Using Velcro will make it easier to adjust the stuffing if you need to later on. Velcro will also make it easier to wash the cover. Since this will be sitting on the floor If you don’t intend to keep the draft guard forever you can just use the no sew tape to form a permanent seal. The Velcro only needs to be used on one end so the other will need to be sealed with the iron on bonding tape.
Step 4- Test the Fit
Your door draft is now done. You will want to stretch it along the bottom of the door and make sure it covers the entire length of the door then a little more. You may need to fluff the insulation if it needs to be stretched a little bit.
Step 5- Add Decorative Finishes
If you are creating a decorative or novelty draft guard you can begin to add the finishes to it once you know the fit is right. Many people will make their draft guards look like little creatures just to add fun to the room. You can attach felt feet, plastic eyes, anything you wish. Only your imagination will set your limits.
