Making a Blanket Pillow for your Couch

by Alyssa Davis
It has become more popular, and fashionable, to save space and time by combining handy items into multi-function or multi-purpose products. Those items that are home made typically save even more time and money. Making a blanket pillow for your couch offers a typical throw pillow that folds out into a cozy blanket when you need one.

A pillow that folds out into a blanket saves space, which is often a valuable commodity in the living room. Show off that beautiful couch that you worked so hard to purchase, instead of hiding it with a blanket. Most blankets must be folded or draped, and then stored, taking up valuable storage space. If you store the blanket in a closet or another room, storage for other things is wasted on living room accessories.

Making a blanket/pillow combination is very simple, and does not require a lot of sewing experience or knowledge. It requires a small amount of fabric, normally fleece or a similar material, needle/thread, scissors, and a sewing measuring tape. You will quickly see how easy and handy the blanket pillow really is.

Start your project by choosing the material for the blanket and pillow. You will need roughly two feet squared for the pillow, and the blanket is measured based on your needs. Most people need an average of two yards for the blanket, depending on how large they want the blanket to become. You can choose different materials for the blanket and pillow, or stay the same for both. The décor of the room and blanket do not have to match, but should harmonize.

Place the pillow material on the blanket, being very careful to ensure that the pillow is centered at what will be the head of the blanket. If you choose a pillow material that has a pattern or decorative accents, make sure that this side is facedown so that you can see the beautiful side when the project is completed. Important note: when you sew the two together, do not sew the outer edge. The blanket and pillow should only be attached on the left and right sides, and the bottom portion. The top portion should be left open, so that you can form the pocket that the blanket stores in.

When sewing the sides, leave roughly half an inch of material between the thread and outer edge of the pillow. This will create a workable seam for the pillow, and this should not pull when the blanket is folded into the pillow. Leaving less material could cause the thread to pull or gap later.

After you have sewn the pillow, tuck the blanket into the pocket. Then, you can add decorative accents, such as handles made of fabric, ribbon, or faux leather. This is also a great project for teaching students, since the blanket pillow is so simple to make.

Making a blanket pillow for your couch is fairly easy, and a very quick project to complete. Choose fabric and threads that work for you, and do not be afraid to get very creative with colors and patterns that work for your living room and couch. Whether it becomes a family project, with a blanket pillow for each member of the family, or a few throw pillows with bonus blankets for guests and cozying up, it can be a fun way to express your individuality and add a cost-efficient accessory to your living room.
