Making Your Windows More Energy Efficient

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Screw Driver
  • Screws
  • Caulk (clear or white)
  • Caulking gun
  • Tint (optional)
  • Drywall sinkers
  • Cloth Rag
  • Small bucket of water

Making windows energy efficient does not require a lot of time, but can make significant impact on your energy bill.

Step 1 – Get Rid of Leaks

You may not realize it, but your home is full of leaks. Your windows have many vulnerable spots, even if you can not see them. Go around the edges and seal each window with liberal amounts of caulk. When finished, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth to remove excess.

If your existing caulking is old and worn, use a putty knife to detach and remove it. You can caulk in a fresh bond with the new application.

Step 2 – Check Your Hardware

Make sure your frame is in good condition. If a wood frame has rotting, it needs to be replaced. Also check cranks and casings to ensure that they are tightly sealed.

The most airtight window is a fixed-pane window that does not open. A double-hung window is the least air-tight. Regularly tighten cranks so they do not become loose, causing cracks in the sealant.

Step 3 – Apply Coverage

A heavy set of curtains can be very effective in keeping heat in or out. Before you hang curtains, make sure your curtain rod and hardware (usually comes in a kit) are strong enough to support the weight. Place sinkers into the drywall before attaching the screws. This will help secure the rod and supply additional support.

You can also apply a tint to the windows. Choose any DIY style that meets your needs. You can choose between reflective, semi-reflective, dark, light and medium tints, among many others. Apply with a squeegee and liquid, usually water.

Step 4 – Use Timing

In order to truly maximize the energy in your home, pay attention to the time of day. For instance, if you are trying to warm your home, open curtains during the warmest part of the day. When the sun goes down, close the curtains, which will trap the collected heat inside. To cool your home, keep curtains closed during the warmest part of the day.
