Memory Card Shopping Tips for Digital Cameras

by DoItYourself Staff

Digital cameras are fantastic because they allow us all to take as many photos as we want without risking wasting money on developing them. Instead of film, digital cameras use memory cards to store photos on. These memory cards are small computer disks which will digitally store the picture information.

There are lots of different types and brands of memory cards available, so how can you choose the right one for you and your camera?

Tip 1 - Compatibility

The first thing that you need to consider is the compatibility of the memory cards with your camera. There are a few different formats and each of these looks different. Memory cards are often not interchangeable, so you need to make sure you select the correct one for your camera.

Tip 2 - MMC or SD

MMC and SD cards look the same and they can normally be used interchangeably. MMC is an older technology and is rarely found, however, if you have an old MMC card then you can use this in a camera which takes SD cards. SD cards are the most popular type of memory card for compact cameras.

Tip 3 - Transflash or MicroSD

Transflash is also known as MicroSD and this isn't really that popular with digital cameras. Transflash cards are typically used in mobile phones and media players due to their small size. Some cameras do take them so you may need these. There are also adapters available to convert a microSD card into a regular sized SD card if required.

Tip 4 - Compact Flash

Compact flash cards are much bigger and they are also older technology. Compact flash may be older but it is still preferable for use in digital SLR cameras. It isn't often used on compact cameras due to the size of the disks themselves.

By choosing the right type of memory card you will be able to ensure that it will fit in your camera.

Tip 5 - Capacity

Another thing to consider when choosing memory cards is to make sure that it is big enough for your needs. Also make sure that your camera can support the size of memory stick. For example SD-HC cards are any card which is over 4GB in size, not all cameras will be able to support these.

Tip 6 - Brand

Memory cards have been around for years and this means that there are lots of different brands producing them. The brand that you choose will depend on your preferences, most of these are identical and buying a cheap card will normally be fine.

Tip 7 - Extra Features

There are also some cards which have some extra features which may be useful. For example, you can buy an SD card which has a built-in USB connector. This makes it very simple to connect the card to your computer without needing any additional readers or equipment.

One of the latest types of SD card includes a wireless network adapter. This means that the card can be connected to your wireless network so that you can access your photos without even needing to connect your computer to the camera. This is an ingenious solution as it draws power directly from the camera itself.
