Motion Detector Wiring Tips

by DoItYourself Staff

Motion detector wiring can be easy to do with a few basic tools. There are many different types of motion detectors designed for different purposes, whether for security, for lighting or other applications. Read on for a few tips on how to correctly install and wire your motion detectors.

Selecting the Area for the Motion Detector

A motion detector connected to a light is not just for security. What if you just got home from a day of shopping and your hands are full. How many times have you fumbled with your bags just to turn on a light just to drop bags? Wiring a motion detector to a light inside the home will provide you with the light you need when you need it. It may also help conserve electricity and save you money as the lights will automatically turn off when not in use.

You can also install a motion detector wherever you have an external light wired. Choose an area with a clear sight line so that nothing will obstruct the area in front of the unit. For outside the home, avoid placing the motion detector in areas that are in the line of sight of bushes or trees. When the wind blows, leaves could trigger the unit.

Electrical Safety

When you work around electricity, you must observe strict safety standards. Always turn off the electric at main circuit breaker. Ground yourself before you work, and continuously test the wires for current with an inexpensive current checker.

Use fresh wires for your motion detector. Over time, wires can corrode and lose their effectiveness which makes new wires much safer and more cost-effective. You simply have to cut and strip the old wires and splice them with the new wiring.

Attaching the Motion Detector

Many who install motion detectors often attach the light or motion sensor first and then add the motion detector wiring. This seems like a great idea, but is actually the reverse of what should be done. The thinking behind installing the sensor or light before the wiring is that it will cut down on waste or make it easier. Neither is the case. The motion detector wiring should be installed prior to affixing the motion detector sensors, the light or the alarm.

Knowing the Wires

Motion detector wiring is like any other wiring project and, as such, you need to know what wires are for what use. Not all instructions will be clear, and not all electricians use the same wires or standards as the company that made the motion detector. Black and red wires are always hot, whereas white wires are neutral. Ground wires vary from bare copper to yellow or orange.
