Motor Oil

by DoItYourself Staff

Picking the right motor oil for your vehicle may seem easy enough. All you have to do when selecting motor oil is look at the thickness and look for the approved symbols of the API and SAE right? Well not quite, there are some other things that should be taken into consideration when finding the right motor oil.

• Viscosity – Viscosity is a fluid’s resistance to flow at 0°F and 212°F. The W stands for winter. The first number is the viscosity in motor oil. So 10W-30 has less viscosity than 20W-50 does. This allows for one oil to be rated better when it’s cold versus another one being better when it’s hot. The second number tells you how resistant it is to thinning. So 10W-30 is more susceptible to thinning than 10W-40.
• Full Synthetic Motor Oil – Not all engines require or perform best with full synthetic oil. Synthetic is mainly designed for high tech engines, new cars, or heavy duty or off road trucks and SUV’s.
• Synthetic Blend – Synthetic blend is a combination of normal oil with a little bit of synthetic chemicals added. They tend to be used by people who want extra protection and work good for any vehicle.
So What Motor Oil Should you use?

The best way to find that out is to ask the dealer, look in the owner’s manual, or research it online. By researching it you can find out what type, thickness, and viscosity of motor oil you should get for your car.
